River Conditions

On a warm sunny day there’s nothing quite like being on the Upper Arun, it’s a fantastic section of the river to learn to Paddleboard or Kayak. To ensure you get the most out of your experience please check conditions. Gaining an understanding of how they can impact, will ensure you stay safe and enjoy yourself when out on the river.  Although there are no set rules to define “best” weather conditions for kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding we hope this page will help plan your trip.

At Pulborough Paddles we go out rain or shine however safety remains our priority.  If for any reason the river is unsafe at the time of your booking, we will reschedule at no additional cost.

  • Tide times are important though fortunately, owing to our location, you can expect no more than a gentle flow.  Also, our easy access launch site means that you can come and go at any time of the day.  If however you are planning a longer trip downstream towards Pulborough and Arundel the tides are strong and careful planning is a must.

  • Wind is another factor, even a 5 mph wind on open water can be hard work to paddle against and is likely to blow you off course.  Thankfully the stretch of the Arun upstream from Stopham Bridge is well sheltered both by the South Downs and surrounding hills.  Even when it’s blowing 15 mph on the coast you can still find calm water to enjoy a day out paddling in West Sussex.

  • Air temperature between 18 and 25 degrees and sunny is comfortable.  Any hotter and dehydration and sunstroke can become a problem.  Precautions such as hat’s, drinking water and sun cream should be considered.

  • Water temperature is only really a consideration if you’re learning to paddleboard.  The Arun at Pulborough usually reaches +14 degrees from June until end October at which point most people out on the river don’t wear wetsuits.  Any earlier in the year or if you are particularly susceptible to the cold then it’s a good idea to come prepared.
